KN101 Beginning Knitting (2 cr)

In addition to learning the mechanics of the knit and purl stitches, you’ll learn how to cast on and bind off, how to combine knits and purls into basic stitch patterns, how to increase and decrease, and how to follow a basic pattern. Fundamentals of label reading and international care instructions will provide you with a better understanding of fibers, yarn weights and the importance of gauge.

$55, plus the cost of supplies

Swirls Hat
KN301 Swirls Hat (3 cr)

Fair Isle knitting is a type of stranded knitting and in this stranded knitting class you will learn the magic of knitting multiple colors without twisting your yarns into a knot! You will learn the technique of weaving yarns while you knit that creates short floats (strands on the inside of the hat). You will learn to follow the pattern in both text and charts as you create this beautiful keepsake.

Fingerless Mittens

KN213 Fingerless Mittens (3 cr)
Fingerless mittens are perfect for keeping your hands and wrists warm while allowing your fingers to stay active.  In this class, we’ll be working with a template pattern that uses a basic stockinette stitch background, while allowing us to customize at various points along the way.  As we knit our mitts, we’ll learn how to knit in the round, how to shape our knitting using decreasing and increasing, and how to knit the comfortable-fitting asymmetric thumb gusset.  The knowledge and skills learned in this class will give you a strong foundation to go on to knit more complicated and intricate mittens and gloves.

Cedar Leaf Shawlette

KN220 Cedar Leaf Shawlette (3 cr)
This pretty little shawlette is just the right size – large enough to wrap warmly around your shoulders and small enough to wrap around your neck as a scarf.  The gentle curve of the shawlette is the result of short-row shaping on a simple stockinette stitch fabric.  Once the body of the shawlette is complete, the lace-leaf border is knitted onto the lower edge – it’s an intriguing process to watch unfold!

Disaster Recovery

KT104 Disaster Recovery (2 cr)
One of the most important skills you can have as a knitter is the ability to diagnose and repair your work. The first step is recognizing you have an error. The next step is interpreting your work and diagnosing what happened and why. Finally comes knowing how to fix the error, whether it is simply to rework a few stitches or to rip your work. This class is a great confidence builder, and since you will be working with swatches rather than a dearly beloved project, you will be able to rip and repair with abandon! You will finish with a better sense of how stitches are formed, how they connect, and how to get yourself out of trouble.

Socks on the Magic Loop

KN204 Socks on the Magic Loop (3 cr)
Here at the shop, we all love knitting socks – they’re fun to knit, perfectly portable for knitters-on-the-go, and are chock full of intriguing knitting techniques.  In this class, we’ll learn to knit one sock at a time using the Magic Loop method, which uses just one very long circular needle to knit in the round.  We’ll explore different cuff, heel and toe options, and we’ll discuss how to knit socks that really fit.  You’re sure to appreciate the Magic Loop method, which can be used for many other circular knitting projects.  No prior circular or sock knitting experience required.

We’ll create a heel flat and learn to turn the heel without leaving any holes . We’ll shape a traditional toe and finish off with the Kitchener  woven ending.   This method of knitting in the round can be used for many other projects. Tunisian Crochet

CR207 Tunisian Crochet (2 cr)
Tunisian Crochet (TC), a.k.a. Afghan Stitch, uses one long crochet hook to create a unique fabric that looks surprisingly like knitting.  The fabric can be very dense (perfect for cold weather garments), very soft and drapey (perfect for scarves and shawls), or have a more woven look (perfect for home accessories).  In this class, we’ll learn the basic Tunisian stitches:  simple stitch, knit stitch, purl stitch, and full stitch; and we’ll explore how to combine these basic stitches into some of the hundreds of stitch patterns available in Tunisian Crochet.  We’ll also have an opportunity to learn how Victorian-era women embellished the basic Tunisian fabric with counted cross stitch, which will provide us with endless possibilities for decorating our finished projects!

Otherwise, check in with the store for information about your pre-work swatches.

Socks on Two Circular Needles

KN203 Socks on Two Circular Needles  (3 cr)
Sock knitting is very popular because of the portability of the project in addition to the fact that they can be completed in a relatively short period of time. There are three commonly accepted ways of knitting socks: use 4 dpn (double-pointed needles), one long "magic loop" or use two circular needles.  The advantage to using two circular needles is that when you are not knitting, your work slides onto the cable where your stitches stay until you bring them back up onto the shaft.  Learn the terminology of socks: gussets, heel turns, toe decreases and grafting using the kitchener stitch.  You may find yourself hooked on socks!

You asked for it, you got it! The fun of this project is when you actually drop stitches intentionally! You've seen our shop sample, now knit one of your own. Learn to stabilize the stitches bordering the dropped stitch, knitting on the bias, and planning for stable edges to protect the dropped stitches.
